About Us

Since 1982 our family operated farm has been ever evolving to meet the changing needs of your family. Our pleasant store specializes with meeting the growing demands of health and environmentally conscious people. We take pride in offering a one-stop shopping experience for locally produced, certified organic and traditionally raised products. Your local farmers thank you!

We are able to make available our own sustainably raised pork, beef and chicken products. Our animals are raised without antibiotics or growth hormones, eat an all vegetable diet with no animal by-products and are treated with dignity and respect.  Our beef cattle graze on pasture, the pigs enjoy fresh air and sunshine, and the chickens scratch in the earth!

Shane has expanded his interests and is responsible for our vegetable and herb gardens.  He spends much of his free time in the winter months planning the following years crops. We do not use any commercial fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides.  All of the weeding (which is almost a full time job) is done by hand hoe and wheel hoe.  The harvesting is all done by hand to ensure that the vegetables and fruits are not bruised or damaged before making the 1 minute trip to the market shelves.

As industrious as we are, we can't do it all ourselves. We are grateful for the opportunity to showcase meats, produce, crafts and other talents of our community. Nicholyn Farms works with more than 65 local farmers that are paid a fair price for their product. This allows small producers a venue that is devoted to promoting on their behalf. Nicholyn Farms recognizes that today’s families are busy. We also acknowledge that all producers are not easily accessible. It is mutually beneficial to bring all the goodness together.

History

Seeking the splendour of rolling countryside, fertile fields, fresh air and sunshine, Nick and Lynda purchased the farm in 1982.

Hard work and determination grew a herd of a 150 sow farrow to finish pork farm. In a failing marketplace hard work and determination weren’t enough to keep the farm afloat; they looked for ways to diversify.

The following year the Barrie Farmers’ Market was rejuvenated.  That venue seemed to be a natural progression of farm gate sales.

As business grew, more retail space was needed. More people were coming directly to the farm. Nick and Lynda opened a small store in a room adjoining the house. Here they started with the three P’s; Pork, Pies, Preserves.

Customers coming to the farm wanted to source out more variety in local meats and produce. Nick and Lynda talked to members of their farming community and were able to increase the offerings.

In 2000 their eldest son, Shane, returned to the family operation after completing college and gaining practical experience through management of retail business. Shane shares a passion for providing premium locally produced organic and traditionally raised foods to the local community.

In 2002 the still family-owned and operated farm built their new on-farm market store. Through the new store they are able to continue to provide for the growing needs of the community, and continue to work with more farmers in offering you the best our area has to offer.

In 2002, the full-fledged scratch bakery and certified kitchen started production 7 days a week.

In 2010, the Cafe, began offering homemade soups, sandwiches and salads for eat-in or take-out, along with certified organic, fair trade teas and coffees.

Green Policy

Nicholyn Farms devotes much time and interest ensuring that we make every effort to reduce waste.

We ask you to think whether you really need to use one of our bio-degradable grocery bags.  We encourage you to keep re-usable bags close at hand.  We have made two styles available, at cost.  They are of high quality, durable, cost effective, and most importantly, kind to the environment!  The insulated bag also supports the vital need for food safety.

In keeping with our philosophy, Nicholyn Farms has invested in solar energy on the farm.  These panels generate clean, renewable energy that we harvest from the sun.

All of the heat in the retail market is produced by the compressors in the refrigeration equipment.

We actively recycle all eligible materials.

Our organic produce benefits in its growing environment, since compost is used as nutrients to fertilize the soil.
